Attendee Profile

There are two principle attendee personas of the Monospace conference: Microsoft community influencers and Linux/Unix/Mac developer. Both personas share common interest and passion for software development using Microsoft’s implementation of the Common Language Infrastructure and libraries known as “.NET” that are supported on Microsoft’s platform, and the Mono Project’s implementation that operates on Microsoft’s platform as well as on a number of distributions of Linux Unix, Mac, iPhone, Android, Amazon EC2, and a host of special-purpose platforms.

The Microsoft community influencers who will attend Monospace are traditionally forward-thinking, and have a track record of influencing future directions of software development in the Microsoft community. This is the same community that formed the alt.net movement in 2007, concentrating greater awareness on agile, open source, and skills and knowledge diversity in the .NET community. Members of this community are both Microsoft staffers and members of the customer community. Many of them are contributors to principal open source projects in the .NET space, many of which have been models for subsequent Microsoft product efforts.

The Linux/Unix/Mac developers are experienced cross-platform developers who may use Windows, but who principally use platforms in the Unix lineage, such as Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac, amongst others. They choose to use the Mono Project’s implementation of .NET to develop software for these platforms for productivity and quality of developer experience offered by Mono and .NET. Many of them are responsible for creating recognizable, best-of-breed applications used on popular Linux distributions, and many of them are direct contributors to the Mono project itself. This persona also includes corporate IT developers who’s companies have adopted open source server software for building and operating both internal and external web, desktop, and middleware applications.

Monospace brings the best of both the Microsoft .NET and Mono developers together to share platform-specific and community-specific experiences, fusing these communities in common interest and common goals into a community of practice and influence greater than the sum of its parts. Monospace is ground zero for a watershed moment when influential Microsoft .NET developers embrace and champion multi-platform development with .NET, and where Linux, Mac, and Unix developers engage with some of the best and most progressive and influential developers in the Microsoft community, while reconnecting with fellow Mono developers and Mono Project contributors and principals.
